Top Ten Best Beginnings
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

Because I *hate* spoilers with a hatred that burns brighter than a dragon's fire, I'm doing my favorite openings so that I can share the first lines with you. :)

1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling
"Mr. and Mrs. Dursley of number four Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank  you very much."

2. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
"It was a dark and stormy night." (Only this book can pull this line off.)

3. The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket
"If you are interested in stories with happy endings, you would be better off reading some other book." (I just reread this one and it's still clever eight years later.)

4. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
"My name is not Mara Dyer, but my lawyer told me I had to choose something."

5. Beauty Queens by Libba Bray
"This book begins with a plane crash."

6. Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
"All children, except one, grow up."

7. Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway
"The day I broke up with my boyfriend Evan was the day he wrote the song. You know, the song." (I can quote the opening page or two of this book.)

8. Paper Towns by John Green
"The way I figure it, everyone gets a miracle."

9. Graceling by Kristin Cashore
"In these dungeons the darkness was complete, but Katsa had a map in her mind."

10. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
"Once upon a time an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well."

Honorary Mentions (AKA I got carried away with this list and really love these even though I already have ten):
Every Day by David Levithan
"I wake up. Immediately I have to figure out who I am."

Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
"Dear friend, I am writing to you because she said you listen and understand and didn't sleep with that person at that party even though you could have."

I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga
"It was a beautiful day. It was a beautiful field. Except for the body."

What are you favorite opening lines?

  4. Lol, the opening line of Beauty Queens is very honest. The beginning of all of the A Series Of Unfortunate Event books are funny. Thanks for sharing, lovely list! :D

    1. Haha Beauty Queen's first line is definitely very matter of fact. (That book is the best satire ever, probably, haha.)And yes, the Series of Unfortunate Events is hysterical- the dedications are probably my favorite part. :)

  5. Good list, those all seem like pretty good opening lines I've only read Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Bad Beginning and Harry Potter though. I really do like the opening lines of I hunt Killers and Daughter of Smoke and Bone even though I haven't read their books.

    1. Beauty Queens is tied with the Gemma Doyle trilogy as my favorite Libba Bray book (which is saying something). The rest of the book is as awesome as its beginning!

  13. I forgot about the first line of A Wrinkle in Time! And you're right, not many books could pull off that line, but Wrinkle sure can! It owns it all the way.

And yes to HP and The Bad Beginning!! Oh, and Beauty Queens, too!

    1. It's such a cliche line, but A Wrinkle in Time is just like "You know what, I'm going to take this cliche and do it right."

  14. The opening of Audrey, Wait is so epic! I definitely need to read that book soon. HP made my list as well. I'm really annoyed with myself for forgetting Paper Towns, as it is definitely one of my favourite openings of all-time, it just slipped my mind as I put my list together!
